4.8.5. Emails disappear from mailbox

Attention!

On the hosting side, messages from mailboxes are not deleted.

The most common reason for mail disappearing from a mailbox is a POP3 connection to the mail client, which removes all or part of the mail from the server after downloading it. You can check for POP3 connections in the authorization log of your mailbox.

Messages can also be deleted when using IMAP. For example, by accident or by some users sharing a mailbox. The reasons may be different.

See Restore messages in mailbox.

You can also search for missing messages in mail clients that are configured to connect to your mailbox.

It is recommended that you do the following:

  • Configure the mail client to use the IMAP protocol instead of POP3.
  • If POP3 is required, configure your mail client to save messages on the server after they are downloaded (instructions can be found in the official documentation for a certain mail client or in public sources on the Internet).
  • Make sure only the right users have access to the mailbox, change the password, etc.
  • Periodically perform export of mailboxes with important messages and keep a backup for yourself.

If you use hosting account mail, you can switch to corporate mail, where automatic backup with restore is available.
